How do you run pppd when you dial manually?  Do you have your ISP's domain name
server listed in /etc/resolv.conf?  If this is a redhat box,  let us see your
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/chat-ppp0 and /etc/ppp/options files and the
command you use to start ppp.

Try useing "shutdown -h now",  and see if you still have the problem.  That is
the orthodox way of shutting down the system.

I know about useless access, I used to live in Montcalm county.  What a
wasteland!
