Yes, you need a distribution of Linux compiled for the MAC.
I've never tried it, so I'm not going to be much more help,
except if you don't get your questions about it answered here,
check out the MLUG group in South Bend IN.  I know they have
install Linux on MAC desktops.  Maybe join their mailing list 
and ask them.   http://www.mlug.org/

If you decide to get an Intel based laptop, the Linux on Laptops

Personally I've installed Linux on Gateway 2000, NEC, Digital, 
and Micron laptops without problems (your milage may vary).
