I've found that with kppp, you need to remove everything from the options
file. Kppp supplies all it's options on the command line, and they can
conflict with the options file, causing a lot of problems.

Are you SURE you don't have a win-modem? If so, you're out of of luck.
I created my options file and chat script file manually from the HOWTO
document a long time ago.
I've heard that the redhat "control-panel" can set it up much easier.
Give that a try. (I've never used it, so I can't be more specific)
