I'd have to agree with you.  From the Linux messages, it sounds like
there is an error in the drive that it thinks all disks are write
protected.  I don't know why it still works in DOS.

*MAYBE*  Linux probes the drive to see if it's write protected, and 
DOS just tries to write to it.  I don't know, that's just a guess.
