Re: Can only mount /dev/fd0 read-only?!

The required stuff...

-> The power/data cables are all plugged in (I was just inside the case the
other day)
-> The floppy is not write-protected (I am however occassionally guilty of
this so I won't be too offended :-)
-> Access Methods:
  1) mount /dev/fd0 /floppy (this has worked fine until now)
  2) kfloppy (KDE) Since I am not at my computer today,
I can't remember the exact error message.
  3) During the SuSE install process (when making a boot disk)
I am told that the disk drive cannot be accessed (or
something to that effect) and I cannot create a boot disk.
I have only two users (public and root). Since it is only running on a
single desktop at the moment and I am the only one who needs access to the
machine until school starts in the fall. That's probably irrelevant anyway.

What I was trying to do was tar and bzip a few personal files and archive
them to a floppy because I upgraded from one 850M hard disc to two 6.8G
discs. Archival worked fine until I tried to copy the final file to my
diskette. When I mounted the diskette I got an error to the effect of
~...mounting Read-Only...~ I can't remember the exact wording but it was
only a single line. I thought it had something to do with permissions, but
I couldn't find anything strange. I tried both as public and root and
neither worked. So I just reinstalled everything (the stuff I lost wasn't
terribly critical anyway) and I still can't gain write access to the floppy.
So I'm on vacation for the weekend and I'll mess with it tomorrow.

Some other notes:

I looked at the fstab file, but didn't bother to write any of the info.
down. I'll get back with that Monday. Same with the error message.

And your diskette has enough free space for the file(s) you
are trying to copy to it, right? (you're sure, right? :)

I tried to format the disk initially with kfloppy, then tried mounting it
from the command line.

Yes, I am trying to copy. Problem is, I can't get that far. Will only
mount read-only.

thanks again,

Jason
