partition sharing

this is kind of an extension of the "sharing swap partitions" discussion
from last week.  my question: exactly how far can partition sharing safely
go?  i'm interested in running redhat and slackware side by side, and
switching back and forth relatively seamlessly.  would it be safe, for
instance, to share the /tmp partition?  how about /home?
