It's never easy, is it?

So, I bit the bullet this weekend and signed up with an ISP. I plugged my modem in and away I went. I called up the ISP and after three tries, I was on the internet. The air tingled with excitement as I downloaded my first 13MB file. Yes, I pulled down the tarball for Netscape Communicator 4.61. Surprisingly, it installed fairly easily. It was downhill (in the bad way) from there.

Since Netscape doesn't support my visual (4 bit PseudoColor), it uses a different palette (apparently) and so my screen colors swap around every time my mouse moves over a Netscape window. I can live with that for a while. (Unless someone has an easy fix, I've tried all 4 visuals indicated by xdpyinfo and they all have similar results. But this is not the real problem. Read on.)

After my first wonderful experience (beginner's luck?) I logged on again. This time I noticed that my mouse locked up when I was on-line. Well, I tried a few more times and it seemed to be consistent. So, it must have done it the first time, but I didn't notice because I was using the command window or something.
So, I switch IRQ's. That fixed the mouse lock up. Only now, I haven't been able to establish a connection fast or stable enough to download the fetchmail rpm (what is it, 61K?) let alone a 13MB tar ball! It has been suggested that my telephone line is to blame. I wonder if switching the IRQ created other conflicts.

My Current setup is cua4, IRQ4. My modem only appears to allow IRQs 3 & 4 on cua4.

What Now?
