the only time i got something like this, the disk was legitamately bad and
had to be replaced. sorry.

well, depending on where the physicaly defect is on the disk (assuming
that really is your problem), lots of stuff could be fine. in fact, most
of it probably is. just get everything OFF of that disk and get a new one
in there.
