Yup, it looks like you need to use the "xhost" command to
open up authorization on your X server for localhost before
running linuxconf (run as the user who signed on).  i.e.:

  xhost +localhost.

That's not a 6.1 bug, and not an bug at all.
6.0 was also setup that way.
