Modprobe/PPPD problem

I'm running a stock BSWare 6.1 Pentium 200 machine. Previously I was using BSware 6.0, along with NT, 98 and BeOS and PPP worked fine in Linux. I reformatted, repartitioned, and made the box 100% linux. I installed BSWare and chose to install everything. Last night I tried to setup PPP and I kept getting an error when attempting to run PPPD. "Can't find secret (Password) to authenticate with". I would normally think that this means that my /etc/ppp/pap-secrets file is incorrectly formatted, but I verified that it is set up correctly. I checked /var/log/messages and directly preceding every failed attempt to connect with PPPD an error was listed from modprobe stating that it could not find the module "char-major-108". I did a search on my system and could not find this file anyware. Has anyone else come accross this problem, or know of a way to fix it?
