It depends on what you want to do with it Bruce.  I've had a Permedia2 based
card (Diamond FireGL1000 Pro) and it was great.  However, it's a developer's
card -- it's meant for rendering applications.  It's not that good of a
gaming card.  I had plenty of fun with it though and it seemed more than
adequate for games just not a scremer with frame rates.

My suggestion would be to find a TNT out there, they're going for dirt cheap
now that the TNT2s are out.

However, if you're going the freebie route I can tell you that the Permedia2
will do OpenGL which is a supported API of Quake 3 (I think).

Have no info on the Matrox for ya.
