Why don't you spend some money on this "cheaper hardware" for
your Linux machine?
You're comparing Windows on Pentium class PC to Linux on a 486/66!
Sure windows is going to look better, since you don't have the
power to run a newer KDE or Gnome desktop.
If I had Linux loaded on a PC like yours, and it was down for
two weeks, I wouldn't miss it either!!! That's brutal!!!
(I know, I used to run Linux on a 486/66 at home)
That 486/66 might be okay for a small server or Masq. box
setting in a closet, but it's NOT something I would want to
set in front of for very long and use as a workstation!

In my experience, Linux handles newer hardware much better than
it handles antique hardware (386/486). I have many PnP devices
on _newer_ Linux PC's, and have NEVER had a problem with them.
