ahh, ok...  I have been using accellerated X and as a result have to
pull the special xdm-3D package to get it to work.  (or did anyway -
haven't had time to play with it much since the 6.x versions of
redhat have been out)

those do still tend to create their logs in the xdm working
directories under /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm
