I tried the process you suggested, and had no problems Netscape, I also renamed
the old one back to ~/.netscape and it also worked fine.  I think that I may
have had something else going on somewhere that I don't have the knowledge base
to make a connection with this problem.  Through various trouble-shooting
measures that I won't go into detail with (because the problem didn't tweak me
out too much) I cannot get the "run netscape, get a reboot instead" problem to
repeat.  I haven't had any problems with performance, or anything you mentioned
above before or after the reboot issue.

*Shrug*  Go figure.
