Re: Novice user help
Bruce,
Thanks for the quick reply. I have been reading all the sites I can on
an almost daily basis. Tuesday meetings are virtually out for me, I am a local
Fire Chief and we have meetings EVERY tuesday evening!!
I'll give you some history before flooding with problems.
My Machines
1-file server only
Gateway P5-120
Pent. 120mhz.
32meg ram
2.3gig HD
running Caldera Openlinus 2.3 set up as a NFS, and SAMBA server. no x
1-Windoze running (for now)
Gateway P6-200
Pent pro-II 200mhz
3.6gig HD
40meg ram
running Win98 SE (this machine is located in the Fire Station)
1-Dual Booting (for now)
Gateway P6-500
Pent.III 500mhz
128meg ram
(2) 13.6 gig drives
hda1 (win98, Bootmagic mbr) 4gig
hda2 (Linux (COL2.3 all packages) root 4gig)
hda3 (win data drive 4gig)
hda4 (linux swap remainder)
hdb1 (linux /usr @6gig)
hdb2 (linux /home @7gig)
1 floppy
1 cdrom drive
1 USB cdrom CD-RW (so far not usable under linux)
All on an ether net LAN 10base T
I have 1 ISP account and need to set-up IP masq. for the other machine at the
station. That for later..
My problems first began with the fact that I have 2 windows apps that are
imperitave to the operation of the department, so I set up the Dual-boot
arrangement. Next problem was that the Data for both those programs were only
avail when my machine was running the win system, so I set up th eserver for
the data on those 2 apps, that way no matter which OS was running on my machine
the data is avail to the other machines on the LAN.
then I began working with VMware. Got it working fairly well, but it will not
run most important of the 2 apps. VM is working on that. Next I purchased a
copy of Win4Lin from Trelos. Love it it is VERY fast compared to VM. But to no
avail still will not run the app I need most. Left a message for Trelos on that.
Now for the first problem that I need your help.
1. I read Glen's "small time DNS" on http://schvin.net and set up a DNS server
on my machine. (don't ask me why, I just did!) now the problem I have is that
amd, and many other systems keep reporting to me "YPBINDPROC_DOMAIN: domain not
bound" and now when my kppp is connected to my ISP my system cannot find my
local LAN machines. I think I would just like to remove DNS and rely on the
Hosts file no more machines than I have, ??
Solving that problem first would make me real happy, and allow me to work on
other issues. My goal is to eliminate the need to dual boot, and remove the Win
partitions all together!
Thanks for ANY input you may have...
Mike
