Re: Novice user help
Hi there,
Are you in the Kalamazoo area? If yes, I highly recommend attending the
KLUG meetings. They currently meet at WMU. Info on meetings is available
at the website http://kalamazoolinux.org The first Tuesday of the month is
"beginners" night. If you bring your PC to the meeting, you can have Linux
installed on it and even get a CD of Linux. Again, check out the website
for details. Last I knew, there is an online questionaire to fill out
before bringing your computer to the meeting so the install gurus can be
prepared for your system.
If you aren't local to the Kalamazoo area, you'll need to obtain a CD of
the Linux distribution of your choice. Many of the people on this list use
Red Hat, so that may be a good choice if you're looking here for help. :)
A good reference book can be helpful as well. I have "Using Linux" from
Que and am pleased with it. The KLUG website also has a zillion messages
in a searchable engine that you can look through. I strongly recommend
looking through there for answers as well.
Personally, I think it's important to ask yourself what you want to do
with Linux. Surf the web? Play games? Develop software? Setup a file
server or firewall? Write letters? Keep an address list? Plot world
domination? :) OK, maybe not that. But set some goals and then go after
them. There aren't too many things to hold you back from attaining them in
the Linux world. :)
Good luck!
