Forget about boot magic, you don't need it.

What was the exact name of the tarfile you downloaded? I'm asking becasue 
I went to the home site for lilo and download the latest .tar file, and 
it's all source code. You need to unpack the tar file and compile lilo, 
then install it.  For a beginner, it may be better to simply install Win98 
on a somewhat smaller partition, so the that Linux root partition (maybe 
only about 250 MB) will fall under the 1024 cylinder line, and then the 
LILO that ships with Mandrake will be just fine.
