>From a Linux shell prompt (xterm or console login) type:

  ping name-of-win98-box

Inserting the correct name of the Win98 box of course.

I think the same command works from Win98 at a Dos prompt.
(replacing the name with the name of the Linux box)

Do you have TCP/IP configured?  What IP addresses are you using?
Try the ping command using the IP addresses instead of the names 
and tell us what happens.
