Announcement of mailing list

Greetings!
   You are geting this message because you downloaded my reply to Chris
Gidman via FTP, or you've asked to be part of this mailing list. A number
of other people downloaded the reply, but I have not been able to identify
them.

    There was considerable objection to continuing that thread on the full
klug mailing list; the purpose of the "os-discuss" mailing list is to con-
tinue discussing the ideas expressed in that thread, and any topics we think
are related.  This list differs from the klug mailing list in a few important
ways:

* At least for now, it is not announced to the general public. The only 
  formal availability for this list is going to be made by an announcement
  to the general klug mailing list. I do not plan to make it available 
  through our web site until we see how discussion goes.

* The automatic mechanisms for joining and leaving this mailing list have
  been disabled; you may only join or leave the group by sending me an
  e-mail message. Membership in this group does not effect your member-
  ship in the klug mailing list itself.

* This list is essentially an experiment. We can do anything we want here,
  but the expectation is that we'll conduct ourselves on-topic, and maintain
  discussion at a fairly high level.

The floor is now open of discussion, and we can assume that everyone enrolled
at the moment has read my reply. Take it away, folks!
