KLUG Install Request

Linux Installation

Welcome to the wonderful world of Linux! Whether new to the community or an old hand, we look forward to helping you get the most out of your new system, starting with a smooth, clean installation! To do this, we must know a few things about your machine and the distribution you wish to use. Please help us to help you by filling out and submitting this form before bringing your equipment to our next introduction and general assistance meeting. If anything seems unclear, or you have a question about an installation-related issue not covered here, please feel free to contact us by email.
Your Name

Your Email
We need your name and email address to contact you.

Distribution

Linux is available in several distributions. Please indicate which one you intend to install, and which version in the text field provided. If your distribution is not listed, select Other and include name with version.
Name

Version

NOTE: The Kalamazoo Linux Group provides some distributions on request for a nominal fee. If you wish to use one of these, it must be ordered in advance! Please see our catalog of available packages (link opens in separate window), and place all CD orders to cdsales@kalamazoolinux.org

Basic Hardware

This form assumes the requestor will be installing Linux on an Intel x86 or compatible (AMD, Cyrix) processor-based system. KLUG does not presently provide support for other processor families.

Processor Speed
While a slower processor will still run Linux well on single-purpose dedicated machines, we recommend a minimum of 300MHz for new users hoping to explore the general capabilities of the latest and greatest distributions. Of course, for any general purpose machine, the faster the processor, the better.
Memory
Again, more memory is usually better on a general-purpose machine. We recommend a minimum of 256MB for the most recent distributions, although as little as 64MB may be acceptable for basic usage.

Storage

Main Drive

Second Drive

For speed and simplity, this form requests only the most basic information about your first two hard drives, if present. That should be sufficient information to start a basic installation, but the requestor is welcome to indicate whether additional drives are present.
Additional Drives
Please count only hard drives over and above the first and second described above. Do not include any CD/DVD or other removable media, writable or not.

Video

Resolution

Controller

Monitor

Please provide make and model of graphics controller, along with monitor type and maximum resolution, if known.

Other Hardware

At the very least, your machine will need a CD-ROM reader in order to install any current Linux distribution. While it is possible to install most distributions over a network, KLUG does not offer the facilities to support this option.

CD-ROM

Ethernet

Wireless

Modem

Please specify if each item exists, along with makes and models if known.

Besides installing the system and initial packages, KLUG can provide assistance with configuring other system hardware, including network cards, modems, etc. It is very important to indicate any additional hardware you wish to use on your machine, as some vendors may not directly support their products under Linux. Fortunately, the Linux community is a vast one, and drivers for most hardware are usually developed eventually, with or without vendor support. If you have any questions, comments or other issues not otherwise addressed on this form, please feel free to add them here:

For best results with additional hardware, we strongly urge anyone wishing to take advantage of our installation services submit a request at least one week in advance. This gives us an opportunity to look for any potential hardware issues and prepare to deal with them, if necessary. Installations are performed at our monthly introductory and general assistance meetings, held the first Tuesday of each month.
