I've never had that problem (or anything that resembles that problem)
and I have/had a lot of IBM Intellistations, including a dual P2-450.

I could guess that you should check your BIOS throughly.  It could be
you have some APM setting turned on that's causing something to go to
sleep.  And while you're at it, you might as well disable the stuff to
allow booting over the network.

I also vaguely remember some special Linux program that's available for
the eepro100 chipset, that controls certain sleep modes (and other
stuff).  I don't remember the program's name, or where to get it, but
some searching of the newsgroups and/or google should turn it up.  Try
the BIOS first!  Only bother looking for this program as a last resort,
because I've NEVER had to use that program.  I ran across it a lot time
ago while looking for something else, as I recall . . .
