I don't know anything about that HP, but if I was looking for a
notebook in that price range, I'd give serious consideration to a:
Toshiba 1415-S173 i.e.:

(I'm not saying that's the best price or the best place to buy them)
We've bought a few of them for salesmen here at work (Windoze), but I
managed to get my hands on one for a day or so and installed Redhat 9 on
it for a test.
Everything seemed to work fine "out of the box". The display seemed
accelerated running at 1024x768, USB worked with my digital camera,
PCMCIA worked with a modem card, the builtin NIC (Intel Pro100 VE
chipset) worked fine, sound worked, and the CDRW was recognized although
I didn't try burning a CD.
I didn't test anything to do with power management.
> The best part is the keyboard illumination!
I didn't notice that power sucking feature on the Toshiba.
