Micron, Dell, Toshiba, Sony, Gateway. Those are the real options. I would like to give more business to Micron because of there solid machines and backing, but I have standardized on Dell notebooks already at this location. I have had 3 notebooks repaired under warranty in the past couple of months. Dell actually sends someone from Airborne express (that day or the next) to pick your PC up. You hand them the notebook, they pack it in their own box and take it. (this was the standard low-end warranty)

I had them pick one up at 5pm on Wednesday and the notebook was back in my hands before 9am Friday. (and the other times had the same results).
On the other hand, there are still some Compaq notebooks here (before my time) that were purchased at BestBuy and CompUSA. We physically drop it off and then they had it for more than a week just to replace the hard drive. (and we had to take time to drive out).

Do you have a brand/model you recommend that is carried by major

Avoid the outlets. BTW, Athlon XPs ROCK!
