Personally I would avoid Sony.  (I hate to say that because I own stock
in Sony, but it's true)  My previous laptop was a Sony, and it was a
pain in Linux.  I had to patch the kernel to get USB to work, power
management never worked, and it died a premature death after only a year
or so.  No more VAIO's for me!

As far as Linux support, I've always had good experience with Dell. 
Another option I would consider is Dell's auction.  We've bought a lot
of Dell laptops for work from there, and have had fairly good luck.  
You can even buy some with laptops with no-OS off the auction.  And 
Dell seems to do a fairly good job of reconditioning them.  FWIW ...
