>>>>>Anyone have any experience with the HP ze4220?
>>>>But ya gotta remember, It's an HP/Compaq. I speak with experience here.
>>>>This box that I am using now is a Compaq. Propriety software, _and_
>>>>hardware. HP's are the same. I bought one year ago last Nov. for a server.
>>>For laptops you have: HP, Compaq, Toshiba, and Sony. Pick the least of
>>>all evils. And what works all depends on the model.
>>Micron, Dell, Toshiba, Sony, Gateway. Those are the real options.
>Personally I would avoid Sony. (I hate to say that because I own stock
>in Sony, but it's true) My previous laptop was a Sony, and it was a
>pain in Linux. I had to patch the kernel to get USB to work, power
>management never worked, and it died a premature death after only a year
>or so. No more VAIO's for me!

Gotcha, scratching Sony off list....

>As far as Linux support, I've always had good experience with Dell.
>Another option I would consider is Dell's auction. We've bought a lot
>of Dell laptops for work from there, and have had fairly good luck.
>You can even buy some with laptops with no-OS off the auction. And
>Dell seems to do a fairly good job of reconditioning them. FWIW ...

You couldn't pay me to own a Dell. Around here they drop like flies, and
I still haven't forgiven them for the "It takes us two years to make an
LCD display that works" debacle. Not to mention those REALLY annoying
intern commercials... "What can I build for you today?"; "Nothing, but if
you ask me just one more time......"
