>>>I don't know anything about that HP, but if I was looking for a
>>>notebook in that price range, I'd give serious consideration to a:
>>>Toshiba 1415-S173 i.e.:

>>Forgot to mention, the only thing I didn't like about that PC is it
>>doesn't have a serial port. So if you need to connect into routers ...
>Yep, I looked at that one. The no serial port is bad. I jack into a lot
>of Rs-232 management ports and my lowly Palm 100 is serial. :(
But after reading reviews and reviews and reviews.... I think the
Toshiba 1415-S173 wins. The worst this someone could say is that the
batter life isn't stellar and it is rather heavy. Several people
commented on the solid construction, bright display, and overall
ruggedness of the design (all important to me). And Bruce says it like
Linux, in fact, all of its components are listed on the RedHat 9 harware
compatibility list.
So you may be meeting a 1415-S173 on Tuesday.
I'll just have to work out a solution for the lack of a serial port.
Interesting I could find almost no information on the HP models.
>Also the HP lets one add 1Gb of Ram vs. just 512Mb on the Toshiba.
>>Speaking of which, does something exist, like a USB to serial port
>>converter that works in Linux???
>Yes, I've used one. Don't remember the brand. That and my cell phone
>plugs into a USB port and shows up as a serial port (like it was plugged
>into a Hayes compatible modem)
