hdparm shows that DMA isn't enabled and it won't let me turn it on.
This isn't specific to the laptop as I've found reports on the kernel
list of late. There are work arounds but I haven't tried anything yet.

I don't think so, every model I researched seems to have dropped APM
support. XP certification wants ACPI, and says APM is depricated.

Don't know yet, the ACPI support situation seems rather convoluted.
