Printer quality doesn't seem to bear any relation to OEM, every model
stands on its own. I've had crap printers of every derivation. Our
purchasing department says that HP models have the least expensive per
page supplies - pretty much across the board. And given that supplies
end up covering the cost of the printer pretty quickly....

They've "just worked" for me. Images look fine. I moved to the Epson
Perfection (USB) from an HP 4c (SCSI) mostly because of the size of the
physical unit. I think the Epson produces a somewhat crisper image, but
most of what I scan is B&W documents for archival (CDs being smaller
than file cabinets). {But I'm red-green-color-blind}. My wife who does
a fair amount of work with photographs and "art" has never complained
except that scanning at something like 1200dpi takes some time (that
would be USB on a laptop vs. SCSI on a server more than the scanner
device - I suspect).
