What does `lspci` say? Does it show up there?

Are you using kernel boot commands for ide-scsi, i.e.:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.0-test6 hda=ide-scsi root=/dev/hde2 ro

And does your version of SuSE come with the IDE driver for your
DVD-CDRW?
