"The sale, likely to be in the $1 billion to $2 billion range, is expected
to include the entire range of desktop, laptop and notebook computers made
by I.B.M."
Doesn't much matter to me. I've never been able to afford an IBM
laptop/notebook, and I don't buy desktop hardware (that is someone else's
gig). They buy all kinds of crap: Dell, Compaq, HP, etc... depends on the
week. One craps out and I open a task to have it replaced/reinstalled.
Getting out of the PC business will just let them spend more time focusing
on the important stuff - my servers! :)
"If I.B.M.'s personal computer business ends up being sold to Lenovo, it
would continue the migration of high-technology manufacturing to China and
Taiwan."
Good for them, China needs the jobs! And we desperately need a rival
'super power' to give the red whack jobs a 'real' target for all their
paranoia and power fetishes.
"But in the most recent quarter, I.B.M. ranked a distant third in
worldwide PC sales, with 5.6 percent of the market, according to Gartner,
the market research firm. Dell was the leader with 16.8 percent of the
world market, and Hewlett-Packard, which has absorbed Compaq Computer, had
15 percent."
So the top three combined only account for 37% of the markey?! No wonder
noone can make any money there.
