Back to my comment (much earlier in the discussion) about Lite-on support:
They have tremendous community involvement and support.
You will find alot of lite-on patches worked on by the community (not 
lite-on themselves).

You don't have to have windows to do the flash.
Option 1: Run the dos flash utility mktflash.
Option 2: Run Windows from a bootable USB flash drive or CDR (yes, it's 
possible) to run the flash update.

Yes, it _is_ (and has been) possible to overclock a CDburner (or CDdrive)
by flashing the firmware.  Very analogous (pros and cons) to overclocking 
your CPU or GPU.

I flashed my Sonys (lite-on) with 700A firmware (mine cost $65, the 700a 
was $150) and it works great.
