You might think, 'hey I'll settle for the cheapo'. But in reality,
you are hitting cream-of-the crop. Lite-on(China) has tight ties to JVC(Japan).
That's probably why they manufacture drives with the labels:
Sony, Plextor, Asus, etc.
I have a few DVD burners right now (Sony DW-U18A, Sony DU-U18A, Samsung
dual-layer). The Samsung is Toshiba/Samsung. The Sony's are both rebadged
Lite-ons. (I just got rid of another Sony DVD burner I had about 3 months
ago--that was NOT made by Lite-on and that 4x DVD-+RW never had issues).
The Sony's I have now are both new and had problems since day one.
They would create flaws about 2/3 the way of a DVD (coincidently at
the spot where these drives were going through self-recalibration during burn).
Not just that, but neither of them lit red while burning.
After 10 jacked discs, I pulled the DW-U18A out and then used the W18A.
That also coasters some DVD-R (and I was underburning 8x Ritechs at 4x).
This was getting to be an expensive annoyance (and not trusting my stored data).
Anyway, I hacked them to be Sony 700A drives and then they worked like a charm
(and coincidently lightup red while burning).
I have had no issues with Samsung yet.
The specific model Liteon you list is real close in specs to the Asus 5224
(quite likely it is the same drive, but I cannot confirm that).
Not sure why you want that _specific_ model, other that it is a great drive for
Securerom copying and defeating other forms of copy protection.
Of course, some plextors do better..but that is starting another conversation.
Good luck!
