Lite-on is a great drive with a great community.
Good quality and a huge hardware community that offers tweaks and improvements.

HipHop, baggy jeans, du-rags <> crack dealer, pimping or gang
Hacking <> illegal cracking.
Fair use COPY <> Bootleg and pirating.

I know plenty of legitimate (and responsible) reasons to copy:
-proprietary data
-program discs for off-site storage as part of disaster recovery and management
-music CD's of toddler songs that seem to get scratched beyond usability every 2
weeks.

While many companies make it increasingly more difficult to rightfully backup
your media, you ARE allowed to back-it-up (and yes DMCA has introduced more
noise into the mess. NOTE: pay attention so you do NOT purchase music cds that
are missing the CompactDisc logo on it--they do not adhere to defined CDROM book
formats to intentionally limit your ability to play the discs in PCs or
traditional players.).

Not to mention home videos you can play in DVD player (sure, you can do with VCDs)

Good DVD-+RW drives are under $60 now (no rebates) and the media is $0.25-$0.55
per disc(no rebates, free shipping) depending on brand/type (not including
dual-layer media).
(note: the drives are oftentimes marketed as 'dual format', but these are not
the same as 'dual layer'. This is to indicate abilities for +R and -R).

The DVD is much more versatile than CDR/CDRW. In fact, I think that should be
part of the name. Oh, wait...it is! Digital Versatile Disc**

**DVD initially stood for: Digital Video Disc before adoption as storage format
for more than videos.
