In some cases, but not always.

Your ISP should give you all that info.

Or you can look at the settings of an email client
that you have working to see how everything is set.

An email client that comes with a calendar, tasks, etc.
Thunderbird is also nice, as Mike said.

My problem with kmail when I looked at it a long time 
ago, is it didn't support IMAP (only POP3).  I don't
know if that's still true.
