[Novices] Black screen of death

Are you using KDE or Gnome?

Please define "lockup".  Does the mouse most move at all?
Does the caps-lock or num-lock light toggle when you press those keys?

If you hold down CTRL and ALT and press BACKSPACE when it's locked up,
does that do anything?
