[Novices] Black screen of death

>I am running KDE.  In the first condition, the mouse
locks up as soon as I bring up that screen, no matter
where the curser is on the screen.  When the screen is
black, who knows.  CTRL,ALT, BACKSPACE does nothing.
Esc. does nothing. Enter does nothing.  When the
screen is locked up, neither CAPS LOCK or NUM LOCK
toggle the light.
