It sounds like some kind of hardware problem, but I really have no idea
how to fix it without a lot of hardware swapping trial & error.

You might be able to work around the problem (not a fix) by nuking all
the user's KDE settings and then not touching the screen saver settings
after that.

Or, you could try to upgrade to SuSE 9.2.  I just got my copy yesterday!
