[Novices] printing in Fedora Core 2

Hey folks,
Thanks for your help on the wireless question, first of all. It seemed
so weird to me that just repositioning the WAP would have that much
effect, but it does seem to be the best solution so far (though not
ideal). The Linksys repeater was hopeless, it seemed.
Now I have another small problem. I would like to print to a networked
printer at my office in Kalamazoo College. I know from exploring the
Windows side that the 2 printers available to me are on
Phantom.knet.kzoo.edu, and that their names are 'HH2' and 'HHColor'. In
the past, in older RedHat's, I have just printed to an IP address. But
that seems no longer to be an option, except in the "JetDirect" setup
(whatever that is). CUPS and UNIX setup all want to know the server and
queue. But how do I know what the queue is? I couldn't seem to
discover this at all hunting around through the Windows printer setup.
Is it '/printers/HHColor', for example? Or just 'HHColor'? Or is the
server address really HHColor.Phantom.knet.kzoo.edu...? I tried many
combinations and none seemed to work. I also tried printing to an IP
address under the 'JetDirect' option, since I'd learned the IP.
Then, something like 20 minutes later, I happened to go back to the
printer room after printing something from Windows (last resort!), and
there was a CUPS test page, so *something* must have worked, eventually.
I noticed with RH too that IP printing was really slow, so maybe that
was the only thing that worked... but if so, why is it so slow? The
Windows printing started right away.
Anyway, thanks for any insight. This should be easy, I know, but I
remain baffled by network printing in linux.
Steve
