[Novices] Evolution mail client

Running Suse 9.2 Pro, KDE desktop.
Evolution runs smooth but I can't find how to enable 3 things:

1	When starting a new message, I am used to being able to start typing
the name in the "to" box and a list of manes that match pops up.
With this latest version, nothing happens.  Where is the setting to
change this?

2	There is a button with "TT" in it and 4 "A" buttons in the tool bar.
They don't seem to be active.  How do I activate them?

Are their other and or better mail clients that you folks would suggest?
What about Thunderbird?  I admit I would like to explore this one first.
Any help on these issues would be appreciated.
