[Novices] SuSE: How to switch window managers?

I'm installing SuSE Pro 9.2 as a Samba server and trying different
window managers.
1) During the install, I changed the Software package(s) from
"Standard System with KDE", to "Minimum Graphic System". I also
added most Samba*, IceWM*, FVWM* packages. (The system
automagically added WindowMaker.) I don't want KDE, I want to
experiment with those 4 (above three + twm). (I know KDE is not a
window manager.)
2) When the install gets to "Hardware Configuration" (to setup
monitor and graphics card), the system hangs after about 15
seconds. I have to do a cold boot, and pick "Fail Safe" to login.
3) I made CYA copies of /etc/sysconfig displaymanager &
windowmanager...
displaymanager has "DISPLAYMANAGER=xdm"
windowmanager has "DEFAULT_WM=twm"
4) I ran "yast x11" to setup X. (The monitor I have is really a
FOREFRONT TX-D1753NM, but the company that I got it from, changed
the monitor ID string to their company name "INTERGRAPH".) After
fixing the monitor setting, X works just fine. :-)
The files in /etc/sysconfig have changed (I assume by yast)...
displaymanager has "DISPLAYMANAGER=kdm"
windowmanager has "DEFAULT_WM=kde"
When I login as root or a regular user, the FVWM window manager
fires up just fine. :-)
( echo $WINDOWMANAGER=/usr/X11R6/bin/fvwm2 )
5) I installed the Patch CD (dated 12/212004) and about 20+ updates.
Now FVWM doesn't automagically start. :-(
( echo $WINDOWMANAGER=/usr/X11R6/bin/twm )
The two files in /etc/sysconfig have not changed.

Question - How do I change/pick/switch/whatever to the other window
managers?
