[Novices] Evolution spell checker

How do you turn it on and get an icon on the tool bar?  In Tools>
settiwng> composer preferences, the box says "check while I type" but
that doesn't work as I mis-spell words and it neither corrects, hilights
or when I go to edit> spell check documents, it says that there "no
mis-spessed words found" when there are.  So it obviously ins't working.
Notice the mis-spelled words in this msg.....How do I fix?  Brock
