It's really not that hard to check a few packages and install them.

Why _download_ Thunderbird?  
It should come on your SuSE CD's, if you want to try it.
(it's called MozillaThunderbird on SuSE)

I only ran it for a few minutes, so I don't know how it handles things
like spell checking (and I probably won't be able to answer any other
questions you may have), but feel free to try it.  Let us know what you
think about it.
