[Novices] recording on a floppy

I'm late to this thread.

I use floppies all the time on Linux. I don't think any of my Linux
boxes even have a usb port, or if they do, I haven't tried them. Heck,
I haven't even ever hooked up speakers to a sound card on my linux
machines. Come to think of it, I've never tried to write a cd or view a
DVD on linux. That said, I still use linux boxes all the time.

My favorite firewall is floppy based and, in the words from their
website, "more than one floppy is bloatware" :-)

To record on a floppy just save your file to /mnt/floppy

To copy a file you might be able to drag and drop it on the icon or,
from the command line,

cp /path/to/my/file /mnt/floppy

Using floppies on Linux is a lot like on a Mac, you have to mount them
and unmount them. You can't just push them in the drive and expect them
to work. Neither can you write to them and pop them out of the drive,
the files won't be on there.

1. Put the floppy in the drive, mount it.

On this linux box here, to mount a disk I put in, I just right click on
a blank area of the desktop and choose Disk/Floppy.

2. put whatever files you want on the drive, see above instructions as
examples.

3. UNMOUNT it before you remove the disk.

On this linux box, I umnount by right clicking on the floppy icon that
appeared when I mounted it and simply selecting Unmount.

Then you can pop the disk out and use the most popular network
transportation protocol in the world: sneakernet.

Hope this helps,
