 From some looking around, I've indeed found that mplayer should play a 
stream to a file but so far I have
not been able to get mplayer to work with any BBC stream.  The problem 
seems to be related to improper paths to  mplayer fonts that are indeed 
on my system.  Maybe, with a little more time, I'll get it to work.
