[Novices] Problems X After Install

By "the messages", do you mean the log in (probably)
/var/log/XFree86.0.log? If not, you should have a look at that file,
which should contain the record of X's most recent (attempted) startup. 

In case you're not familiar, each entry in this log begins with a pair
of characters in parentheses. Any (EE) is bad, and probably any (NI) you
find in there, too. (WW) isn't good, but probably won't trip X like (EE)
will, or at least not as badly.

Give it a look over, and see if you can identify any problems. If you
can't figure it out, or already tried, you might try posting the log,
probably on the members list.
