[Novices] changing default paper size

Suse 9.2 Pro
Just installed a new Epson C86 printer and after I configured the
printer, I went to print manager to check paper size.  I used
Start/print manager/printer/configure.  Sure enough, the list said the
default was A4.  When I try to change it to letter I get a screen asking
me for "username and password"  The only password I have is my root
password (I think) and it doesn't like that and won't let me make the
change.

I somehow had this changed to letter with the old printer.  Does this
setting revert back when I changer printers/drivers?

How do I:

1	check to see if I do have a user password.

2	give myself one if I don't.
