[Novices] quick question about vpn firewall recommendations

I'm looking for a VPN solution that would allow me to more securely  
transmit data on a wireless network (like at a coffee shop).

Right now I've got OpenVPN set up on my IPCop box, and I can connect  
to it, but I don't see any data traveling over that tunnel with  
ethereal.

Right now I'm thinking of trying out SSH, but I figured I'd look for  
suggestions.
