[Novices] I am very new at this so...

I am running Suse 10 on a HP zd7058cl laptop and I have been trying to get the
following working to no avail....
1. BCM4306 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (talking to a Lynksis 802.11B
Wireless Router)
Apparently Suse has no clue just what type of Controller is installed. I have
tried everything in YAST and downloaded software...nothing works.
2. My installed DVD Player to play all the movies (encrypted and
nonencrypted) in my collection. Right now it plays no movies of any kind
using xine or kaffine. I know about the licensing problem and I know there
is a solution out there but I cannot get the downloaded stuff (MPlayer) to
work either.
Apparently there is nothing simple I can do in Suse about either problem from
what I can gather.
Ethernet works just fine using the same router and the DVD player plays music
CD's just fine.
Now I realize that it would probably be the best thing to haul this machine to
the next help night ( almost 4 weeks away) and I am willing to do that but it
sure would be nice to get this fixed before then.
If someone is willing to take a crack at this I have no problem with a visit
to my apartment or I could even call ya if ya wanna tackle this over the
phone.
I am green as it gets when it comes to Linux but I do have a somewhat limited
background in this OS. I know I have a lot to learn...I just need some
guidance at this point. These problems are enough to make me wanna go back
to that other OS.
I am into these problems up to my eyeballs...won't somebody help me?
Thanks
Thom
