[Novices] some web images (like google maps) won't load in Firefox

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. But it's still a mystery, I'm afraid.
I have the latest Firefox according to apt-get (1.0.7), and java &
javascripts are enabled. The source html for Google maps is too
labrynthine to figure out what the images are intended to be, though
java does seem heavily involved. I haven't custom-compiled anything.
Flash works fine.
You can see why this might be baffling for me ... It must be
Firefox-specific, since the images work in Opera. I do use a custom css
file in chrome - something I don't understand too well - that blocks ads
and that lets me choose whether to play flash files. But the problem is
still there when I remove the css file (though the ad images return), so
that doesn't seem to be the cause either.
Also, on a perhaps related note, I've noticed lately that I can't
download pdf files for some reason - I've tried from various sites, and
when I try to save them to disk, they either do not begin to download,
or refuse to "finish" after getting all the data.
Thanks again for any thoughts!
