[Novices] some web images (like google maps) won't load in Firefox

I started it - thanks for the thoughts and suggestions.  No, the problem 
isn't yet fixed, but I think we're making progress.  I've quoted my 
original message below.

I tried the excellent suggestion of using Firefox under a new user 
account, and had no problems with google maps, so I suppose it must be a 
user setting somewhere.  I have the site explicitly allowed to send 
images, though (listed as both google.com and maps.google.com) so I'm 
not sure what else could be causing it.

I haven't yet tried strace for the other issue (Firefox's occasionally 
becoming a bizarre CPU hog).
